Today is November 1, El Dia de Los Muertos, the Day of the Dead. This morning at Boot Camp, I mentioned to my workout pal about this. She said, “What??!! A day of deals and miracles?” We laughed and decided that we like that idea. As the day has gone on this has stayed with me.

One miracle I’m experiencing today is the miracle of my skin! Our skin is our largest organ and it’s through our skin that we literally feel the world and our physical experiences. While walking my dogs in the cool foggy morning on the mountain, my skin was awakened by the coolness, dampness and the movement of the air. I felt it on my cheeks, my hands, my shins and my throat. I also felt it in my nostrils and down my throat and into my lungs when I inhaled.

I came home and showered and felt the warmth and wetness of the water, the slipperiness of the soap and the texture of my hair as I washed it. Then I felt the roughness of the towel, the smoothness of my facial moisturizer and the heat of the hair dryer.

I chose clothes that feel good on my skin. I felt the soft and warm wetness of my pup’s kisses as she sat at my feel while I meditated. I felt the warmth of the sun as it shone through the window onto my face as I sat on my meditation cushion.

I am so grateful for my skin and all the sensations I feel through it. This now has me thinking about physical pleasure. My skin loves to be touched in many ways, and I love the feeling of touching another’s skin. When I am physically intimate with my partner, our skin offers to many sensations…

Take a moment and imagine the sensations you experience when you kiss. What do you like about kissing and how do you like to kiss? Do you kiss with your eyes open or closed? Do you kiss with your lips open or closed? Where do you like to kiss and be kissed? The sides and base of the neck? All over the face? On the eyelids? The hands?

I invite you into an experiment about touch and kissing. Take some time and begin with touching yourself. Start with your hands and face and try different types of touch ~ firm, soft, light fingernails, the fingertips, massage, and so on. As you touch  yourself, notice what feels best.

Next, try kissing your own hands and fingers. Again, try different types of kissing and notice what feels good.

If you have a partner, tell them what you have discovered about your sense of touch. Ask if you can explore with them to learn what they like both in terms of giving and receiving touch. You can have a lot of fun with this as you explore and discover. You just may find some new pleasures that you didn’t know about. Enjoy the miracle of touch!

  1. Cancer assaults our bodies in so many ways. That does not mean we have to give up intimacy with our partner. We can grow closer embracing one another while embracing the disease.
